Literature Text

through the glistening strands

lights from the city
grow faint at midnight
as the sound
of a homeless man
changing position
while he sleeps
keeps rhythm with
the crackling of animals
rummaging through garbage.

at daybreak
there is that one second
before dawn
and the one after
where it is
dead silence.
i pull on
the only suit i can afford
but decide to try a different tie,
and on my way to work
there is always that same spot
where the steam rises from the sewer
and glistens
in the strands of sunlight
peaking through
from the awning overhead.
then i remember. . .

i thought we would always be together,
always be a family
until you told me
i had none,
and evaporated
like a ghost.
the last image i have of you
is walking over the rising steam
and disappearing
into the glistening strands of sunlight.

now i sit at my desk
waiting to sneak out
before my boss,
who treats me like something expendable,
can catch me.

i think of how
the day
is getting old
and the lights
will be growing faint,
and once more
the midnight sounds
will take place
in the ally
outside my window.
i've always loved to write, but never thought about submitting any of my poems...

well heres what i think is my best poem (seeing as it won 2nd place in a national contest)
